Melanie Sohajova, founder of Classicco.
I began studying classical piano at the age of six in the Czech Republic. Around twelve I decided to continue toward the conservatory, and spent the following years preparing for the entrance exams and playing in competitions, which opened up the wider musical world to me.
During my first two years at the conservatory I practised intensely, often six hours a day. There were competitions and summer courses, and a great deal of repertoire. Then I developed problems with my right hand from overpractising, and had to stop and rethink almost everything: how I practise, how I use my hands, and what musicianship actually asks of a player.
At nineteen I began teaching at a Czech music school (ZUŠ), which gave me my first real teaching experience. At twenty I started studying teaching philosophy and pedagogical methods seriously, and I earned the Czech professional diploma DiS. (Diplomated Specialist).
In 2018 I was admitted to the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague for my bachelor studies. During the pandemic my teaching moved online, which turned out to be an important part of my education as a teacher rather than an interruption of it. I completed my master's studies and graduated in 2023.
After graduating I worked full-time at a music school, teaching piano, piano history and music theory. I later moved to France, where I live now.
In 2026 I founded Classicco, to explain my teaching ideas and methods clearly and to give adult learners a serious online home for studying classical music.
Why I teach adults
Two sentences I have heard too often.
“I played as a child, but it has been years.” “I always wanted to start, but the time was never right.” I have heard both many times, and they always leave me a little sad — because neither is a reason to stay away from music.
Classicco exists for adults who cannot spend an evening commuting to a lesson, who have limited time, and who are nevertheless genuinely curious about classical music.
I would rather teach someone who wants to understand this music than someone looking to imitate a recording or collect a few pieces. So I explain how the musical system works: how a phrase is shaped, where a harmony leads, why a piece holds together.
My aim is that you become a musician, not only a pianist.
